NURSING HOME ABUSE & NEGLECT

Nursing Home Neglect and Abuse occurs in several forms, including deprivation of basic dignity, malnutrition, dehydration, infection, improper medication protocols, injuries, falls and death.  The most common forms of nursing home neglect are bed sores and falls.

Bed sores, also called pressure ulcers, pressure sores or decubitus ulcers, are progressive wounds that develop around bony protrusions such as the hips, tailbone, elbows and heels.  These ulcers are caused by pressure and reduced blood flow from lying in one position for extended periods of time. The skin tissue gradually degrades, dies and cracks, becoming an open wound.  Without treatment, the sores penetrate to the underlying muscle and then to the bone. These wounds are incredibly painful and susceptible to infection which can lead to extended hospitalization or death.

Professional standards of care require nursing home staff to re-position or turn a patient every two hours to prevent bed sores by relieving the pressure and restoring blood flow.  Unfortunately many nursing homes do not have enough staff or adequately trained staff to meet these professional standards.

If you or a family member suffered a bedsore, fracture, head wound or other injury, you have the right to be concerned and second guess the elder care facility's version of events.  Bed sores and falls are preventable, but all too often result from abuse, neglect or lack of safety protocols.

Hardy Marble LLP, has the experience and resources necessary to uncover the negligence behind the nursing homes falls, including:

  • Failure to assess new patients for fall risk

  • Failure to assist patients in walking or going to the bathroom

  • Falls from beds without guardrails

  • Patients dropped while being lifted or transported

  • Physical abuse or excessive restraint

  • Lapses in supervision or security (wandering off)
